100.000 SchülerInnen in ganz Deutschland sind am Mittwoch, den 12. November, in den Streik getreten. In mehr als 40 Städten gab es statt Unterricht Kundgebungen und Demonstrationen. An vielen Orten solidarisierten sich Studierende und LehrerInnen. Der Ausstand richtete gegen überfüllte Klassen, LehrerInnenmangel und das “Turboabitur”, also die Verkürzung der Abiturzeit von neun auf acht Jahre. Der Streik richtete sich aber auch gegen das dreigliedrige Schulsystem, das dazu führt, dass in Deutschland das Bildungsniveau stärker vom sozialen Status abhängt als in jedem anderen entwickelten Land. »»»»

100,000 school students across Germany went on strike on Wednesday, November 12. In more than 40 cities there were rallies and demonstrations instead of classes. In many places, university students and teachers expressed solidarity. The walkout was directed against overcrowded classrooms, the lack of teachers and the reform of the “abitur” program (the high school degree which qualifies for university), shortening it from nine to eight years. The strike was also against Germany’s three-tiered school system, which leads to education levels in Germany being more closely tied to social status than in any other developed country. »»»»
Celkem sto tisíc středoškoláků z celého Německa vstoupilo ve středu 12.listopadu do stávky. Ve více než čtyřiceti městech opustili své třídy a vydali se na shromáždění a demonstrace. Na mnoha místech jim podporu a solidaritu vyjádřili nejen studenti vysokých škol, ale i učitelé. Akce byla přímo namířená proti přeplněným učebnám, nedostatku učitelů a reformě maturitních studijních programů, které mají být zkráceny z devíti let na osm. Stávka byla také proti německému trojvrstvému školnímu systému, který způsobuje, že možnosti vzdělávání se v Německu staly více svázané se sociálním statusem a původem dítěte než v jakékoli jiné vyspělé zemi. »»»»

Em muitos lugares, estudantes universitários e professores expressaram solidariedade. A greve foi dirigida contra salas de aula abarrotadas, falta de professores e a reforma do programa de ‘abitur’ (um processo que qualifica estudantes para a universidade), encurtando de nove para oito anos. Scott je vysokoškolským studentem na University of North Carolina v Chapel Hill v Severní Karolíně na východním pobřeží Spojených států. Je také levicovým aktivistou a dlouhodobým sympatizantem Nezávislé organizace mládeže Revolution. A protože začátek listopadu byl ve znamení amerických prezidentský voleb, rozhodli jsme se přeložit rozhovor, který s ním před volbami dělal člen Revolution Wladek Flakin. Ptal se nejen na situaci na Scottově univerzitě, ale i v americké společnosti obecně. V politické rovině úplně nesouhlasíme s některými Scottovými závěry (např. s hlasem pro Cynthiu McKinney, afroamerickou kandidátku americké Strany zelených na prezidentský post), ale jsme přesvědčeni, že postřehy amerického revolučního socialisty mohou být pro evropské posluchače zajímavé.

Je to již popáté, kdy se schází Evropské sociální fórum. V posledních šesti letech mělo ESF – největší shromáždění levice v Evropě – svoje silné i slabé okamžiky: od roku 2002 ve Florencii, kde pochodoval jeden milion lidí proti plánované válce v Iráku po rok 2004 v Londýně, kde policie rozehnala mladé lidi protestující proti organizátorům ESF.
